International and Galactic Languages in Fremantle

International and Galactic Languages came to Fremantle

Professor Paul Frommer, the creator of the Na’vi language from the movie Avatar, came to Fremantle to speak at the Biennial National Conference of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) from 5-6 November 2010 as part of his world-wide speaking tour, which includes a recent visit to Paris and Stockholm. The professional translation and interpreting community gathered to share new ideas about the skill and science of translating from one language into another. Interpreters and translators of indigenous languages spoken in the Kimberley mingled with speakers from South Africa, China, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, and USA as well as with recognised experts in the translation and interpreting fields from all over Australia. Director of National Language Service Provider Multimedia Languages & Marketing Ms. Tea Dietterich said, “this year’s program had a really good balance of talks in translating and interpreting including talks on machine translation, demonstration of simultaneous interpreting, as well as the keynote address by Professor Frommer about his fictional language, Na’vi.”

Ms Tea Dietterich, who is also the current President of the Australian Institute of Interpreters & Translators (AUSIT) QLD and sits on the AUSIT National Council, flew to Los Angeles in March this year to initiate the engagement of Hollywood based Prof. Emeritus Paul Frommer as keynote speaker and met up with him again in Paris in September to finalise all details. “The conference had something for everyone and this was reflected by its world-wide attendance including professionals from including Africa, Asia, the Americas.” Ms. Dietterich said, “Professor Frommer brought an otherworldly flavour to what proved to be a very international conference.” When asked what language was spoken mainly at the conference – a European, Asian or African language or perhaps even Na’vi -Ms. Dietterich smiled and said, “English of course.”
