What is food localisation and why do I need it?

Product localisation is important for any business venturing into a broader international market. Our food localisation service involves translating information into the language of your target audience while also taking into account languages that vary by region e.g. in Spain, there are four main regional languages: Catalan, Valencian, Galician and Basque, all under the umbrella of Castilian (Spanish).

This service is important for a number of reasons.

  • Localising product names

Some words don’t translate well into other languages. For example, Starbucks launched a Gingerbread Latte in Germany, where gingerbread was a popular holiday treat. However, sales figures showed their Gingerbread Latte was actually unpopular because Germans don’t use the word “gingerbread” — sales quickly turned around once the name was localised.

With this in mind, having an experienced translation and localisation specialist on hand can be a great benefit!

  • Localising packaging to earn trust

Food packaging is a major extension of branding for food products so it’s important to have this sorted before launching into a new international market.

Packaging needs to adapt to different locations — and not just from a language perspective. Your materials will need to abide by local production and recycling laws, and your packaging will need to display vital information like age limits, nutritional information, health warnings and more. This is crucial for building trust with your target audience.

We also recommend completing market research in the areas you want to target to ensure your packaging/products stand out on the shelf.

  • Providing nutritional information

People want to trust what they’re eating so translating and localising nutritional value is a basic legal requirement. How you display nutritional information is different — this might be determined by your products, the local market or the guidelines in the country.

For example, if you’re selling healthy alternative foods, diet trends will tend to vary from country to country. “Low in salt” or “low in sugar” might sell in the United Kingdom whereas “high in vitamin D” might sell better in parts of Sweden and Finland where there are periods of 24 hours of darkness in the winter months.

  • Addressing local food concerns

Localisation can also help with local food trends and concerns. Before launching a new product, you will need to understand the local diet and existing food concerns. For example, the vegan market is booming worldwide and people monitor their meat and dairy intake very seriously.

Alternatively, if you’re already in the market when a food crisis occurs in one location, you will need to factor this into your market. It might even be an opportunity to build further trust with your customers.

As you can see, localisation can add a lot of value to your business and your marketing strategy. Contact us for more information about our food localisation services — we will provide a free consultation and quote.
