Creating more jobs and support for interpreters in Queensland

An Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland initiative, delivered in collaboration with 2M Language Services, and SSI, the Interpreter Employment Success Program (IESP), funded through the Workforce Connect Fund, powered by Queensland Government's Good people. Good jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022-2032.

The program focuses on meeting the growing demand for interpreters in Queensland.

We are pleased to confirm the support of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) and the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT).

About the Interpreter Employment Success Program

The IESP is a professional development program catering to bilingual speakers, interpreters, and language service users and employers.

The program is a self-paced, hybrid learning model. Participants will complete online modules, as well as supporting tutorials, onsite information sessions, networking events and workplace simulations.

Participants will be exposed to exclusive opportunities to connect with key organisations and stakeholders within the state, discover employment opportunities, work with cutting-edge language technology and AI, and develop personal and professional self-care and wellbeing strategies.

What is involved?

The IESP will be provided free of charge over a two-year period.

The program consists of:

  • 10 self-paced modules with quizzes at the end of each module (To be completed within 5 months of enrolment)
  • 10 tutorials to support learning and module preparation
  • 10 industry induction webinars
  • 2 onsite information sessions
  • 4 onsite workshops on sensitive topics (e.g. voluntary assisted dying, domestic violence, self-care)
  • IT and security testing
  • Regular networking sessions
  • Workplace scenario simulation and practical skill application.
  • "Working with Interpreters" module for client facing workers in Queensland.

Who is the program for?

The IESP is for:

  1. Aspiring Interpreters in Queensland (including migrant, First Nations language speakers and Auslan)
  2. Current interpreters.
  3. Client-facing workers

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the program you must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

i) Australian citizen living in Queensland;

ii) Permanent resident of Australia living in Queensland;

iii) New Zealand citizen permanently residing in Queensland;

iv) Refugee and Humanitarian Visa Holder living in Queensland; or

v) Temporary Visa Holder living in Queensland with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency.

Course cost

The IESP is funded through the Workforce Connect Fund, powered by Queensland Government's Good people. Good jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022-2032.

The program will be delivered free of charge.

Client-facing Workers

"Working with interpreters" online module

The IESP seeks to provide Queensland's client-facing workers with the skills and resources to effectively engage professional interpreters.

Hosted by Settlement Services International, the online training module "Working with interpreters" is now available.

The course is designed for professionals, workers, and service providers in Queensland who currently work with or plan to engage interpreters in their roles, available to Queensland-based workers until September 2026.

Entry requirements

What languages will the IESP cover?

Candidates in all languages are welcome to apply. 

Who is eligible to enrol in the IESP?

Candidates must: 

  • Speak English and a second language. 
  • Reside in Queensland. 
  • Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or hold a visa that offers a pathway to permanent residency (i.e. temporary, student, and holiday visas ineligible)
Am I guaranteed admission into the program if I meet all the eligibility criteria?

Applications will be reviewed by our team and successful candidates will be notified via email. 

I live outside of Queensland. Can I take part in the IESP?

At this stage, the IESP is exclusive to those based in Queensland as it is a Queensland Government funded program. 

If you are based interstate, 2M Academy has a variety of training materials and resources.

Course structure

What is the program structure?

The IESP involves online and face-to-face training sessions:

  • 10 self-paced courses modules with exams at the end of each module
  • 10 tutorials to support learning and module preparation
  • 10 industry induction webinars
  • 2 onsite information sessions
  • 4 onsite workshops on sensitive topics e.g. VAD, DV, self-care
  • Monthly networking sessions
  • Workplace shadowing and simulation
  • "Working with Interpreters" session for service providers.
Can I claim NAATI PD points?

Yes, the IESP contributes to a variety of NAATI recertification categories. 

Delivery and schedule

What are the program dates?

Course dates are to be determined. Please express your interest to find out more information. 

How long is the program?

The IESP will run over a period of 2 years.

The program content is self paced. 

Upon enrolment, participants are given a maximum of 5 months to complete it.

How will the program be delivered?

The program will be delivered through online and onsite sessions. 

Are there any assessments in the program and how many?

There will be 1 assessment at the end of each module. 

What will I need?

Applicants will need access to a laptop or desktop computer and stable internet connection. 

Where will the onsite information sessions be held?

The onsite information sessions will be held in Brisbane and Gold Coast regions. Other locations will be determined by recruitment results.

English proficiency

What are the English proficiency requirements?

Candidates must be fluent in English.
