Introducing the Global Trade Professional Programme
The GTP has been developed to build a trusted network of global trade professionals (under ISO 17024) as well as a trusted network of Global Certified Global Trade Consulting services (under ISO 17065).
The increasing rate of change in both the trade environment but also the work/employment environment drives the ongoing requirement for individuals working within trade promotion organisations to maintain their existing skills as well as expand their technical competencies and soft skills.
Government bodies (federal, state and local) as well as private sector organisations facilitating trade must also be confident that they have staff that can be trusted as a global trade professional as well as continually updating their capabilities to ensure their skills and knowledge remain relevant to meet the everchanging world, changing workplace and changing mindset of individuals.
The GTP provides different levels of certification for a wide variety of professions.
GTPA is also reaching out to link with tertiary education bodies (“Education Providers”) whose course structures facilitate graduate certification under the GTP Programme – offering a career path for graduates.
Education Providers whose course curriculum has been approved by GTPA under the ISO/IEC 17024 standard are able to offer graduates the additional benefit of GTP certification and the use of the certification post-nominals (cert.GTP, cert.GTM or cert.GTE) in addition to graduate post-nominals. Membership is subject to Continued Professional Development (CPD).
Businesses, professional bodies, as well as government organisations who are members of GTPA may nominate employees to be certified under the GTP Programme.
Later this year GTPA will be launching a new international standard for GTPA business members who will be eligible to be certified under ISO 17065 as either a Certified Global Business or a Certified Global Trade Consulting service.

Businesses can NOW prepare the ground for this new global certification by obtaining ISO/IEC 17024 certification for their employees.
The establishment of the GTPA will benefit SMEs and global supply chains by providing clear professional development paths, access to a network of trusted service providers and the ability to build skills and knowledge and at the same time champion and support women business owners.

As the Executive Director of the GTPA I have worked in international trade for over a decade, focused on supporting SMEs to build their capacity and capability to engage in global trade.
For most SMEs navigating the complexity of doing business globally and maintaining a competitive edge requires the development of new skills and knowledge, as well as the ability to draw on a trusted network of skilled professionals with the required competencies to support their business to grow.

Additionally, nearly all studies into international business behaviour highlight the same common key barriers or perceived barriers:
- a lack of awareness of or information about the international opportunities available to them
- a lack of capability and capacity to engage in international trade
- a lack of information on trade requirements, regulations and markets
- relatively higher costs of complying with regulation—not just those imposed by overseas governments but also regulations in their own country
- relatively higher transaction costs for doing business internationally
- inadequate access to financing, including trade finance, for international opportunities.
