“Walking into Orly Airport in Paris and seeing our very own Australian Dr. Michelle Simmons, Professor of Physics at UNSW, on the giant billboards, filled me with pride,” says CEO Tea Dietterich. A magnificent example of Women in Science transforming the world and an important role model to women studying physics and science across the world.

Tea comments on her way back to Brisbane: “Only a few weeks prior, we had hosted Professor Michelle Simmons, FAA, L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Laureate (Asia-Pacific) at one of our ABIE France functions at the Australian Embassy.”

Ambassador and Permanent Delegate for Australia to UNESCO Angus Mackenzie had welcomed guests and gave the background of the Awards.

Professor Simmons had everyone breathless when she brought the world of quantum computing with its myriad of challenges and opportunities to us. Quantum computing is an area of physics which manipulates the properties of atoms. It promises to usher in a new era of super-fast computers and the race is on as various countries strive to be the first to develop an operational quantum computer.

The evening was a great success (see ABIE article) and to see her legacy and recognition of Australian women in Science at international airports is an inspiration to all of us.
